USAFacts president and Ƶalum Poppy MacDonald ’97 spoke to Fast Company about the importance of access to data for both citizens and lawmakers.
“Our government leaders deserve to have data driving their decisions,” MacDonald says. “Without data, it really is about politics. It should be about is this legislation effective based on the numbers, is it driving positive outcomes that it intended in this country?”
Founded in 2017 by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, USAFacts is a nonprofit focused on researching, analyzing, and sharing government data. MacDonald was previously president of Politico before taking on the role of USAFacts president in 2018. A key part of the organization’s model is its non-partisan stance.
“The way we stay true to that is just the facts; we only use government data as it’s published. We don’t do any forecasts or predictions, and most importantly, we don’t tell people what to do about the numbers,” MacDonald says.
