The School Magazine is celebrating 100 years this year

The School Magazine Exhibition

Exhibition: Civic Library, London Circuit, Canberra from 23 September – 21 October 2016
Open during the Library's opening hours

Enjoy a feast of who’s who in Australian children’s literature and celebrate The School Magazine’s 100th birthday at an exhibition curated by the National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature.

The School Magazine is the longest continuously published children’s literary magazine in the world. Here are the memories of those who loved it as children – favourite stories, poems, illustrations, music and crosswords. A highlight of the exhibition is the artwork and manuscript for My Dog, first published as a short story in The School Magazine and later published as a much-awarded picture book.

Public talk: Join us at the exhibition from 4.00pm-5.00pm on Friday 14 October to hear Alan Edwards, Editor of The School Magazine, reveal highlights over the year.

The School Magazine: Readers' Memories Celebrate Its Centenary

'The School Magazine: Readers' Memories Celebrate Its Centenary' reveals the huge impact and influence The School Magazine has had on generations of primary age children.  For three months in early 2016 the National Centre for Australian Children's Literature invited readers of The School Magazine to share their memories as a tribute and in celebration of this important milestone. From the stories we received, some from as early as the 1930s, we are able to show the importance of The School Magazine in the lives of its young readers. This is not only their story, but part of The School Magazine's own story. In the words of one reader, 'The School Magazine is one of the world's great literary treasures'.
