Courage

'A slam poem exploring what it means to have courage and how we all have courage, although we may not realise it. Courage may be easy to say, after all it鈥檚 only two syllables, 7 letters, 4 vowels and 3 consonants, but how do we use courage more than just a catchphrase?

Full Description:

In 2021 I started experimenting more with poetry and this was one of the poems that I wrote. I entered it in a RoundSquare competition that my school was part of and I was lucky enough to place third with it. For me, writing poetry is a slow process as I find that the best poems are ones led with a large amount of emotion and personal experience. I wrote this poem after hearing someone say 鈥測ou all must have courage鈥 in a school assembly. It inspired me to write a poem exploring the avenues of courage and how courage can be experienced in so many ways. I wouldn鈥檛 define myself as a naturally brave person, it鈥檚 something that I have to push myself to do. However, when starting to write this poem, I realised that courage is so much more than just doing something out of your comfort zone, and it can be seen in lots of other actions that we don鈥檛 often recognise as courage based. After writing this poem, I reached out to one of my English teachers and she provided excellent feedback on how I could edit the piece further to its best potential. I chose to film it as I believe that hearing the poet read their own writing helps the audience truly understand where the emphasis is.
