This unit examines design elements, forms, materials and applications of packaging design. Students engage in a mix of theoretical and practical production activities to develop critical and applied understanding of communication design for three dimensional application and construction of packaging solutions. The focus of the unit is in using the design process to create practical, commercially appropriate packaging designs.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Adapt fundamental packaging design principles and methods for different contexts and materials;
2. Identify and apply design and production of packaging techniques to communicate design solutions; and
3. Demonstrate expertise in graphic design technology and relevant approaches.

It is essential for students to engage in tutorial activities in order to obtain the full benefit from undertaking this unit. 

Inclusion and engagement

Students are advised that any adjustments to assessment requirements or submission need to be applied for via email in advance of the due date, in line with the late submission and extension policy for this unit. This includes any students with a RAP. 

Participation requirements

Regular tutorial participation is extremely important to do well in this unit. It is possible many crucial elements of large assessments are reviewed in class and not participating  might result in unnecessary hardship. In short, all assessments are usefully connected with tutorial activities. If a student is unable to make it to a class, it is their responsibility to organise with a classmate to catch up on the content missed. The students are also expected to check their UC student email and Canvas site for the unit daily for any updates or announcements.

Required IT skills

Sound knowledge of the Adobe Creative suite, effective digital literacy.
